Edgar Berlanga came out of the woodwork last night to call out middleweight contender Diego Pacheco on his moment of glory following his win over Steven Nelson in Las Vegas. Berlanga posted on social media, saying he wanted to give him an A “Big payday.”
Explained by Brooklyn native, Brooklyn native New Yorker, Berlanga Reb Chasing influencetrying to get some cheap publicity by challenging WBO No. 1 Pacheco (23-0, 18 KOS) after his dominant performance against Nelson (20-1, 16 KOS) at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas last Saturday night.
Promoter Eddie Hearn says he would be open to a fight between Berlanga and Pacheco. However, he looked skeptical, as if he didn’t think Edgar was serious about wanting to fight Diego. Hearn is a wise owl who knows that the Berlanga-Pacheco conflict has very little chance of happening.
Canelo effect
Berlanga’s money demands are likely high after the big purse he earned for his successful submission fight against unified middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez. Like many fighters facing Canelo, he will likely mess up and want a similar paste in his next fight. This won’t happen.
Even if it’s a Berlanga vs. Pacheco plays a Puerto Rican vs. Mexico rivalry, the match will not bring a PPV buy. It’s not worth selling him on pay-per-view, and it would take the Turki-Sheikh getting involved to pay him the kind of money Berlanga wants.
There has been talk of Berlanga wanting to fight the 39-year-old Gaby pink Next in Puerto Rico to capitalize on its popularity in that country. He was treated like a champion after his loss to Canelo. The Rosado Association is right up Berlanga alley.
Berlanga was last seen losing to Canelo Alvarez by lopsided 12 round unanimous decision on September 14 by these scores: 118-109, 117-110, and 118-109.
